The Art of Seed Storage 101
When someone brings up seed storage, do your eyes glaze over? Do you think wait - what? I have to store seeds? Or do you just buy transplants from your local nursery because it’s easier and someone else has done all the work?
I get it. I’ve been there. But in this post, I’m going to unveil the secrets of seed storage. And it will change your gardening life forever!
Does your seed storage look like this? Like a hot mess that you have to continuously sort through to find what you need? Or maybe you hate digging through the mess and just order more seeds - even though you probably have the ones you want to plant . . . somewhere.
Seeds are like little creatures - they hold the power to create a world where you have fresh flowers, veggies and herbs at your backdoor - including those varieties that no one else has because your local nursery doesn’t carry the plants for sale.
Begin with selecting high quality seeds. Look to reliable sources that are as close to your region as possible. Reputable sources will likely have guaranteed viability and germination rates. And remember to think about heirloom and open-pollinated varieties as these seeds contain those genetic secrets that your garden is just dying for!
Now seeds are a lot like people - there are some that prefer to be quiet and like dimly lit rooms, there are some that love the light and there are some that really do well in certain temperatures. If you know what your seeds prefer, your storage methods will be more successful.
Now that you know a seed can have its own personality, you’ve probably figured out that they also can be finicky about how they’re stored. But all seeds need to be kept in containers that are airtight, moisture-resistant and offer protection from light - think envelopes, glass jars or resealable bags. Just be sure to label the container with the seed name, variety, purchase date and anything else you want to remember.
Your seeds will do best if they’re stored in a comfortable climate. This means a cool, dry and mostly dark place - like your pantry. Avoid storing your seeds in the refrigerator or freezer - while your seeds don’t like it too hot, they certainly don’t like it to be freezing cold. So aim for a happy medium - if you’re shivering, chances are good that your seeds are shivering too.
Keep an eye on your stored seeds. If you notice any mold or discoloration, or if your seeds start to smell musty, remove those seeds from your stash. You don’t want these bad seeds contaminating their neighbors.
Now some seeds can be kept for years, while others might not last as long. Research the specific lifespans of the seeds you want to store and be sure to start them inside or direct sow them in your garden within that seed’s window of opportunity for the best results.
So now you’re the keeper of seeds and the weaver of plant destiny! You’ve learned the art of seed storage and know how to keep your seeds fresh and ready for the next planting season.
