Herb & Spice Cabinet - Meet Your Immune System

When your immune system needs a little extra TLC, don’t reach for those neon-colored gummies just yet. Turn to your kitchen!

That’s right. Long before pharmacies popped up on every corner, people reached for those herbs and spices they had growing just outside the kitchen door or hanging in a bundle above the hearth to keep bodies warm, guts happy and sniffles at bay. Remember Grandma’s chicken soup with garlic and thyme? Turns out, that soup isn’t just comfort food - it’s immune-boosting gold!

Garlic

Let’s start with garlic (Allium sativum) - the ancient overachiever of herbal medicine.

Native to Central Asia and adored by nearly every culture from the Egyptians to the Italians, garlic contains a compound called allicin, which has strong antimicrobial and immune-enhancing properties. Best of all, it grows easily in most climates - just plant cloves in the fall and by midsummer, you’ll be pulling up your own awesome medicine bulbs.

Bonus: Vampires and unwanted guests will stay far away. LOL

Ginger & Turmeric

Next up, ginger and turmeric, the dynamic rhizome duo. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) originated in Southeast Asia and is famous for its anti-inflammatory effects. It’s perfect for teas, stir-fries and soothing sore throats.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) - with its signature gold color - contains curcumin, which has been studied for its antiviral and anti-inflammatory benefits. Turmeric grows best in warm, humid climates - but you can absolutely grow it indoors in containers with a little patience and a sunny window.

Oregano, Thyme and Rosemary

Let’s not forget oregano (Origanum vulgar), thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) - the Mediterranean marvels. These herbs contain natural compounds like carvacrol, thymol and rosmarinic acid, all of which have antiviral and antibacterial effects. They thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, which means they’re perfect for raised beds or containers.

Pro tip: The more you clip them, the more they grow- so don’t be shy with those scissors!

Cinnamon & Cloves

If you’re more into spice than snipping stems, add a dash of cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) and cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) to your day. Cinnamon can help regulate blood sugar and contains immune-boosting antioxidants, while cloves are rich in eugenol, which helps fight infections.

These warming spices are fantastic in baked goods (of course), but also try sneaking them into your coffee, smoothies or . . . my favorite - an immunity spice blend.

Immunity Spice Blend

Here’s a quick and cozy DIY Immune-Boosting Spice Mix:

  • 2 tsp ground turmeric

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1 tsp ground ginger

  • ½ tsp ground black pepper

  • ¼ tsp ground cloves

Mix together and store in a small glass jar. Stir a teaspoon into warm almond or oat milk with a touch of honey for a comforting golden latte. It’s also great in oatmeal or baked apples.

Hugs! You’re welcome.

Consistency

And remember, building a resilient immune system isn’t about panicking when flu season hits - it’s about consistency.

Just start slowly. Add a sprinkle of thyme to your soup, sip ginger tea in the evening or toss a turmeric root into your morning smoothie. It’s these small, rooted rituals - layered with intention and care - that help us feel our best, every single day.

So here’s to your health - spiced just right.
